A common question that I hear regarding family/baby photography is:  What is the difference between a portrait session, and a lifestyle session?

A lifestyle session is a very unique, specialized form of family photography.  It is always done in your home, and includes no posing or “look at me and smile!” photos.  Instead, I spend some time before the session learning about your daily routines, things you enjoy doing together as a family, special quirks your child has that you may want to remember, etc.  During the session, I’ll shoot candidly as you engage in some of these activities as a family.  The idea is to capture a “slice of life”.   I don’t want you to dress in matching outfits with perfectly styled hair, smiling at my camera.  I want you to throw on your jeans and a t-shirt, let your child smear chocolate on his/her face, and just have fun together!

If a lifestyle session is not for you, however, then we do offer a more standard portrait session as well.  The portrait sessions can be done either in your home or on location.  We try not to shoot young children in the studio as it’s usually too much to ask to have them sit still in front of a backdrop for so long.  That’s no fun at all!  The portrait session includes much more direction by the photographer on posing and clothing choices.

This one was a candid shot at the beginning while Baby J finished up a bottle and was being burped by mommy and daddy!

We’ve known Stephanie and Karl for many years.  They are fellow photogs from up north, but Steph used to live here so they pass through town from time to time.  I was so happy to be able to catch them while they were in Knoxville on Thanksgiving week to get some shots of them with their new addition!! Steph and Karl went through a long, hard, and frustrating journey to bring this baby into the world. It was amazing to meet the little miracle boy!

I love this shot, because it’s so real.  What else is there to do but laugh?
